It’s been quite some time since I set up RallyChannel.tv and if you’ve been checking back every now and again you may have noticed that not much has been happening here, that is of course if you haven’t checked out the “Watch Now” link just up there? You’ll find some very rough and ready video from a few rallies that were quite local to me that I shot largely to try and prove to myself more than anyone that with pretty cheap gear I could turn out some reasonably watchable video, I think I succeeded and as is the way with these things, my earlier efforts turned out the nicest footage, I think?
It’s been tougher than I figured, with getting out and about to rallies being my greatest failing so far, I’m trying to bootstrap this whole thing and it’s no secret I’m pretty cash strapped so can’t throw the sort of resources at RallyChannel.tv that it deserves, like hiring in some help to shoot more stuff and getting a slightly better car, I don’t trust mine further than I can afford the tow home. So I’m battling on using the phrase “sustainable organic growth” to quell my ego and impatience, a delusion supported by the fact that in the last fortnight my videos have had over 1,500 unique views which isn’t bad considering all the traffic has come from a handful of links on BritishRally.co.uk . It didn’t help my momentum when I stumbled into a location licensing glitch at Epynt, £600 to get a filming release for the two rallies I’d filmed there in 2007, sorry everybody I just didn’t have that sort of money to throw away so sadly, no Epynt video’s from 2007.
So what’s ahead in 2008? More of the same I think but sure, in an ideal world it would be great if someone thought what I was trying to do here was cool enough to want to get involved, contribute some video maybe write some articles or just hook me up with people that have something interesting to say and show us on RallyChannel.tv . Your ideas are also very welcome, what do you want to see here? Hey, while we’re in a wishful frame of mind, I’d like a roomy modern fuel efficient car and wait for it… A production budget… Ok, enough with the begging already! You get me though, I can’t do this alone and you just know without a doubt RallyChannel.tv will be a whole lot better with your help.
In the year ahead I’ll be working on bringing the video’s together into fuller productions and really getting stuck into distributing them widely as podcasts for easy consumption with iTunes and alike, high resolution downloads using the Vuze BitTorrent platform and even Joost and Bablegum. I’d also like to to try and get RallyChannel.tv showing in business’ involved in rallying and motor sport too whether that’s a retail store, rally school or even motor dealership. From simply sending you a neatly compiled DVD to play on perpetual loop to co-branding the DVD or setting up an in-store kiosk or AV installation.
Incidentally I’m a marketing guy by profession and heavily into the new ways, so if your in business I’d love to have conversations with you about social objects, inflection points and Authenticity as well as a whole load of other neat stuff like why it’s a good idea to have RallyChannel.tv amongst other things on show to your clients. No catch, no bait & switch, I just love sharing this marketing stuff with you, if you find it useful great.
So leave a comment or if you have your own blog hit me with a trackback, this is the internet and it’s a two way medium not newspaper and yes, it would be nice to know I’m not a lone voice sobbing in the rallying wilderness.
